Overview Syracuse is a city in Onondaga County and the fifth-largest city in New York State (after New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Yonkers). Alternately known by the nicknames of “Salt City” for its salt-mining industry and “The Cuse,” Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County. Syracuse is centrally located in the county and bordered to the north by Salina, to the east by Dewitt, to the south by Dewitt and Onondaga and to the west by Onondaga, the village of Solvay and Geddes. Onondaga Lake is immediately northwest of the city, and Onondaga Creek flows through downtown Syracuse. Nationally known Syracuse University is here and is the city’s second-largest employer after Upstate University Health Systems. Syracuse is in the northeast corner of the Finger Lakes region; two Finger Lakes are within Onondaga County and close to Syracuse (Skaneateles Lake and Otisco Lake, both southwest of the city). Native Americans have lived in the area for centuries, and the Onondaga Nation is just south of Syracuse. The Erie Canal runs through Syracuse, and the Erie Canal Museum is on Erie Boulevard East. The city has a number of cultural attractions and museums, and Syracuse University’s sports teams attract huge crowds (particularly men’s basketball and football). Winters can be brutal, as Syracuse averages more than 115 inches annually, making it one of the snowiest cities in the country. Local Museums & Landmarks The Everson Museum of Art is on Harrison Street. The Museum of Science and Technology is housed in Historic Armory Square at 500 S. Franklin St. The Erie Canal Museum is at 318 Erie Blvd. East and the International Mask & Puppet Museum is on Prospect Avenue. For history buffs, the Onondaga County Historical Association Museum is on Montgomery Street. Syracuse has nearly 100 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places; well-known sites include Clinton Square and the Landmark Theatre.

Essentials Since Syracuse is a major city, you’ll find all kinds of places to go for shopping, dining and entertainment. For grocery shopping, Syracuse has Wegmans supermarkets on Onondaga Boulevard, James Street and West Genesee Street. Syracuse also has five Tops Friendly Markets stores (on West Genesee Street, Nottingham Road, 1st North Street, South Salina Street and in Shop City Plaza). The city also has dozens of smaller stores. For retail, Syracuse is the home of several shopping malls, including Destiny USA, a 2.4 million square foot destination that includes Carousel Center. Other retail centers include Shopping Town Mall, Marshall Square Mall, Shop City Shopping Center and Valley Plaza Shopping Center. West Genesee Street also has a Target store and a Walmart store. The Syracuse City School District is the public-school system that has five high schools and three “alternative education programs.” Parochial schools in the city include Bishop Grimes and Bishop Ludden. Syracuse has four hospitals within city limits – Upstate Medical University, Crouse Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Van Duyn Hospital – as well as the Syracuse VA Medical Center. The Onondaga County Public Library system has 10 library branches in the city.

For college sports, Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team regularly draws huge crowds to the Carrier Dome, which also is home to the university’s Division I football team. For stage productions, Syracuse has the Landmark Theatre on South Salina Street. OnCenter on South State Street is a downtown convention and entertainment complex with a convention center, sporting arena and theaters. The city also has plenty of parks, and Onondaga Lake is just northwest of the city.
