Essentials Since Syracuse is a major city, you’ll find all kinds of places to go for shopping, dining and entertainment. For grocery shopping, Syracuse has Wegmans supermarkets on Onondaga Boulevard, James Street and West Genesee Street. Syracuse also has five Tops Friendly Markets stores (on West Genesee Street, Nottingham Road, 1st North Street, South Salina Street and in Shop City Plaza). The city also has dozens of smaller stores. For retail, Syracuse is the home of several shopping malls, including Destiny USA, a 2.4 million square foot destination that includes Carousel Center. Other retail centers include Shopping Town Mall, Marshall Square Mall, Shop City Shopping Center and Valley Plaza Shopping Center. West Genesee Street also has a Target store and a Walmart store. The Syracuse City School District is the public-school system that has five high schools and three “alternative education programs.” Parochial schools in the city include Bishop Grimes and Bishop Ludden. Syracuse has four hospitals within city limits – Upstate Medical University, Crouse Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Van Duyn Hospital – as well as the Syracuse VA Medical Center. The Onondaga County Public Library system has 10 library branches in the city. |
