Overview Spafford is a town in southwest Onondaga County, with much of the town sitting between Skaneateles Lake and Otisco Lake, two of the Finger Lakes. Spafford is bordered to the north by Skaneateles and Marcellus; to the east by Otisco Lake, the town of Otisco and, at the southern end, by Tully; and to the south by Cortland County (town of Scott). Skaneateles Lake runs along the western edge of Spafford and beyond that is Cayuga County. Spafford’s high terrain and location between the two Finger Lakes provides for spectacular scenery. The town of Spafford is largely rural, with only small hamlets and many forested areas, some of which are protected. Spafford Forest is an Onondaga County Preserve with hiking trails and dirt-bike trails. The largest hamlet in Spafford is Borodino, where you’ll find the town offices and a boat launch into Skaneateles Lake. The biggest attractions here, obviously, are the lakes and the great outdoors. Local Museums & Landmarks The Borodino District School and Borodino Hall are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Spafford Valley, another hamlet, has a picturesque gorge with waterfalls. Neighboring Skaneateles has several historic sites, including an entire historic district, as well as the Skaneateles Historic Society.

Essentials Spafford is a small town with little commercial enterprise. For most shopping needs, you’ll have to travel a short way. For grocery shopping, the closest Wegmans supermarket is on Loop Road in Auburn, 18 miles west; another is on West Genesee Street in Syracuse, about 24 miles north. The closest Tops Friendly Markets store is on Fennell Street in Skaneateles, about 12 miles northwest. For retail shopping, you’ll find most stores in Auburn, which has a Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Marshall’s and the Finger Lakes Mall. The closest public library is in Skaneateles. The closest hospitals both are about 18 miles away, in different counties: Cortland Memorial in Cortland County (to the south) and Auburn Memorial in Cayuga County (to the northwest). Students in Spafford attend the Skaneateles Central School District, which has one each primary, intermediate, middle and high school.

The Spafford Forest, a preserve, has trails and is popular with hunters. Ten Mile Point is a scenic area on the shore of Skaneateles Lake and a popular picnic area. Lourdes Camp, a Catholic-run camp for children, is there. Skaneateles Lake also has sightseeing cruises. For a wide variety of things to do, Skaneateles has boutiques, art galleries, inns and a spa, as well as popular seasonal festivals. Further west, Auburn offers more shopping and plenty of entertainment options, including a movie-theater multiplex, bowling, and museums and historic sites.
