Overview Geddes is a town in north-central Onondaga County, just northwest of Syracuse and along the western shore of Onondaga Lake. Geddes is bordered to the north by Lysander, to the east by Onondaga Lake, to the south by Onondaga and to the west by Van Buren and Camillus. Geddes is best known as the home to the New York State Fair, as the fairgrounds are in Geddes (not Syracuse, as many think). Geddes includes the village of Solvay and the hamlets of Lakeland and Westvale. Geddes is a small town of roughly 12 square miles, but the place has more than 17,000 residents. The town is a western suburb of Syracuse, and it’s quick and easy to get to the city. There are a lot of waterways here; the Seneca River forms the north border, Onondaga Creek formed part of the eastern boundary, and then, of course, there’s Onondaga Lake. Salt mining has been an industry in this area for well over a century, and the Solvay Process Company was a pioneer chemical industry that manufactured soda ash – and was a major employer – until the mid-1980s. Local Museums & Landmarks The state fairgrounds are the most obvious landmark here. The fair has been held here since the late 19th century except during and immediately after World War II when the fairgrounds were used as a military base. The first building went up in 1908. The Solvay Public Library, in the village of Solvay, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Essentials With its close proximity to Syracuse, shopping and dining are easy for Geddes residents. The closest Wegmans supermarket is on West Genesee Street in Syracuse, just 4 miles south of Geddes. Another Wegmans, on Onondaga Boulevard, is only 7 miles southeast. For more grocery-shopping options, Tops Friendly Markets has several stores in Syracuse and another in Camillus, just 6 miles west of Geddes. For major retail shopping, Syracuse has several malls, including Destiny USA, Shopping Town Mall (on Erie Boulevard) and Marshall Square Mall (on University Avenue). Syracuse also has a Target store on West Genesee Street. If you don’t want to travel into the city, Camillus has several places to shop, including Camillus Commons on West Genesee Street and Elm Hill Plaza and Hinsdale Plaza, both on Milton Avenue. Camillus also has a Walmart Supercenter, a Bon Ton, and a Marshall’s store among the choices. Students who live in Geddes typically attend the Solvay Union Free School District, which has one each elementary, middle and high school. All of the county’s hospitals are nearby in Syracuse. The Solvay Public Library on Woods Road in Solvay serves residents here; others are nearby in Syracuse.

Pros & Cons You’re close to Syracuse without living in the city. Getting around is quick and easy. The New York State Fair attracts enormous crowds, and traffic near the fairgrounds can be horrendous during the fair. Proximity to Onondaga Lake is a plus.
