This area has long been a resort area, with summer cottages first appearing in the late 19th century. Sailing has been popular on the lake for even longer. The seasonal cottages have given way to year-round residences. The town includes a village also named Skaneateles and several hamlets and neighborhoods. There are plenty of historic sites, landmarks and scenic features here. The community, which is known for its performing arts, hosts popular festivals in the summer and in the winter.

Local Museums & Landmarks
The Skaneateles Historic District is filled with homes and commercial buildings dating back as far as the late 18th century (although most of the buildings are from the 19th century). Some of the buildings have been converted to boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Sites here that are listed on the National Register of Historic places include Brook Farm, Community Place, the Canning Fuller House, Hazelhurst, the Kelsey-Davey Farm and the Reuel E. Smith House. There are piers that jut out into the lake and parks that line the shore. The Skaneateles Historic Society operates out of a building called The Creamery.
