Overview

Onondaga is a town in central Onondaga County, bordered to the north by the town of Camillus and the village of Solvay, to the north and the east by the city of Syracuse, to the east by Dewitt, to the south and east by Lafayette, to the south by Otisco, and to the west by Marcellus. At just under 60 square miles, Onondaga is one of the largest towns by mass in Onondaga County. There are no villages, but more than a dozen hamlets, including Onondaga Hill, where the main campus of Onondaga Community College is located. Onondaga Hill was the county seat until it was moved to Syracuse in 1830.



Essentials

The hamlet of Onondaga Hill has a Nice N Easy Grocery Shop, a florist, and other small businesses, and the hamlet of Nedrow has a Dollar General store. For a wider variety of shopping needs, it’s only a few miles from Onondaga to Syracuse. For grocery shopping, for instance, the closest Wegmans supermarket is on Onondaga Boulevard, only 3 miles from Onondaga Hill. The closest Tops Friendly Markets store is on Nottingham Road, about 5 miles east of Onondaga Hill. For retail shopping, there’s a Walmart in neighboring Camillus (6 miles northwest of Onondaga Hill). Syracuse has a lot of choices, including Destiny USA Mall and many other retailers. (The Onondaga Nation is home to several “smoke shops,” where customers can buy less-expensive cigarettes, gasoline and other items). 



Recreation & Entertainment

Other than outdoor attractions, most of your entertainment options for Onondaga can be found in nearby Syracuse, which has museums, theatre, movie-theater complexes, a zoo, and professional sports like baseball and hockey. Syracuse also is home to Syracuse University, which has a nationally known men’s basketball program and Division I football.



Transportation & Traffic

Interstate 81 heads north-south and passes through the east side of Onondaga. Route 20 heads east-west through the south part of town. Route 173 heads east-west through the center of Onondaga.



Pros & Cons

There’s plenty of wide-open space in this large town, but it’s also just minutes from busy Syracuse and all that the city offers. With its central location, it’s easy to get almost anywhere in the county quickly. If you’re looking for cheap cigarettes and gas – and plenty of people are—head to the Onondaga Reservation.
