OverviewLysander is a town in the northwest corner of Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Oswego County, to the east by the town of Clay, to the south by the towns of Van Buren, Elbridge and Geddes, and to the west by Cayuga County. There’s lots of water in and near Lysander; the south town line is defined by the Erie Canal/Seneca River complex. Cross Lake is on the west border of Lysander, and the Oswego, Seneca and Oneida rivers join at the east town line. Lysander includes the northern part of the village of Baldwinsville along with several hamlets.
Lysander was part of the former Central New York Military Tract, land set aside to compensate New York’s soldiers for their participation in the Revolutionary War. Lysander includes rolling hills and farmland, and new, upscale homes are becoming more commonplace. Much of the town is a suburb of Syracuse.
Local Museums & Landmarks
The Shacksboro Schoolhouse Museum in Baldwinsville focuses on the history of Baldwinsville, Lysander and Van Buren. Other sites in Baldwinsville, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places, include the Baldwinsville Village Hall, the Crego House, and the Oswego-Oneida Streets Historic District. Whig Hill in the hamlet of Plainville also is on the historic register. |
