Overview Lafayette is a town in south-central Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Onondaga and Dewitt, to the east by Pompey, to the south by Fabius and Tully, and to the west by Onondaga and Otisco. Lafayette has no village but six hamlets, the largest of which also is named Lafayette. The town is mostly rural, situated across hills and valleys and offering spectacular views. Just under a quarter of the land here belongs to the Onondaga Reservation, which also is in the town of Onondaga. The town claims to be located in the exact center of New York State. The area is known as “apple country,” and an annual apple festival is one of the highlights of the year here. Lafayette is located along Interstate 81, making travel to bigger municipalities like Syracuse and Cortland quick and easy. Local Museums & Landmarks The Tully Area Historical Society in the neighboring town of Tully serves this area. The organization operates the Country Peddler Consignment Shop, the Twice Read Book Store and a museum gift shop which is open part-time. Attractions in Tully include two 19th century churches and a train depot. The historical society has sponsored events like a community fair, fashion shows, an ice harvest festival and a circus.

Essentials Lafayette has smaller stores like a Dollar General, a Byrne Dairy and a True Value Hardware store. The Onondaga Nation sells cheap cigarettes and gasoline. Neighboring Tully also has similar-size shopping outlets like the Village Peddler country store, a Nice-n-Easy Grocery, and Aldi grocery store and a Dollar General. For a greater selection or variety, the options are just a short drive. For grocery shopping, the closest Wegmans supermarkets are on Onondaga Boulevard in Syracuse (about 12 miles northwest) and in Fayetteville (about 13 miles northeast). The closest Tops Friendly Markets store is on West Genesee Street in Syracuse, about 14 miles northwest. For retail shopping, Syracuse has a wide variety of choices, including Walmart, Target and several malls. The Lafayette Central School District serves residents here and has four schools – one each elementary and junior-senior high school, the Onondaga Nation School and The Big Picture, a non-traditional school that emphasizes independent thinking and includes community involvement in the learning process. The closest hospital is Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, just 10 miles north of Lafayette. Lafayette Public Library is at Lafayette Commons on Route 11 North.

Downtown Syracuse is only 11 miles and easy to get to via Interstate 81. Syracuse has a bevy of things to do, including restaurants, shopping malls, museums, movie-theater complexes, professional baseball and hockey, and all the attractions at the Carrier Dome, including Syracuse University basketball and football.
