Overview

Cicero is a town in northeastern Onondaga County, bordered to the north by the Oneida River and Oswego County, to the east by Madison County, to the south by Manlius and Dewitt, and to the west by Clay. Oneida Lake, one of the largest bodies of water entirely in New York State, is at the north end of town. The Cicero Swamp, a fairly large swamp, is within the town’s borders. The town of Cicero has dozens of hamlets and “communities,” and includes part of the village of North Syracuse. Hancock International Airport, the major airline server for the area, is at the south town line.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, Cicero has a Wegmans supermarket at 7952 Route 11; there’s another Wegmans in Liverpool. Tops Friendly Markets has grocery stores in Clay (13 miles northwest) and in North Syracuse (6 miles southwest). For retail shopping, the major attraction is Great Northern Mall in Clay, with stores like Sears and Macy’s. Liverpool also has a Walmart store and a Target store both along Route 31. All of the hospitals in Onondaga County are in Syracuse.



Recreation & Entertainment

With Oneida Lake at the north edge of town, there are plenty of outdoor attractions, like boating, swimming and fishing. Cicero has a Gander Mountain store for outdoor enthusiasts and attractions like Big Dons Wild River Mini Golf, the Pumkin Patch (and the Hermit Hayride), Fun Junction (with electronic games), and the Syracuse Swing Dance Society.



Transportation & Traffic

Oneida Lake to the north is popular for boaters. Interstate 81 and Interstate 481, both heading north-south, pass through Cicero. So does Route 31, which goes east-west and is loaded with places to eat, drink and shop. The regional airport is at the south end of Cicero.



Pros & Cons

You’re close to Syracuse and to the busy town of Clay without the traffic congestion of either. Hancock International Airport is at the south end of town. The Erie Canal, which follows the Oneida River here, is at the north end of town. The International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota is only 25 miles east.
