Overview

Camillus is a town in central Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Van Buren and Geddes, to the east by Geddes and the village of Solvay, to the south by Onondaga and Marcellus, and to the west by Elbridge. Camillus includes the village of Camillus and several dozen hamlets and communities. Much of the town is a western suburb of Syracuse; downtown Syracuse is only about 12 miles east. The Nine Mile Creek, which is popular for fishing, passes by the village of Camillus. The town was the longtime home of the world-famous Camillus Cutlery Company, which went up in flames in 2013.


Essentials

Camillus has a number of shopping options, including Camillus Commons on West Genesee Street and Elm Hill Plaza and Hinsdale Plaza, both on Milton Avenue. For retailers, Camillus has a Walmart Supercenter, a Bon Ton, and a Marshall’s store among the choices. For grocery shopping, Camillus has a Tops Friendly Markets store on West Genesee Street and an Aldi’s on Milton. The closest Wegmans Supermarket is on West Genesee Street in Syracuse, a quick 6-mile drive east; another Wegmans is on Onondaga Boulevard in Syracuse, about 9 miles southeast of Camillus.



Recreation & Entertainment

The biggest annual event around here is the New York State Fair, which runs for two weeks in late summer in neighboring Geddes. Camillus has places to shop, eat and drink, and a laser-tag place called The Fun Warehouse. For more recreational diversions, everything you need is in Syracuse, including several movie-theater complexes and museums (including the Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology, the Erie Canal Museum and the Everson Museum of Art), the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, and the Landmark Theater for stage productions. Syracuse also has professional baseball and hockey, as well as Syracuse University nationally ranked men’s basketball team and Division I football.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 5 runs east-west through the town and takes you through numerous small towns and small-town antique shops and businesses. Route 173 and Route 174 head north-south. Route 695 and Route 297 are larger, busier highways near the east town line.



Pros & Cons

Proximity to Syracuse is the major draw here. You’re close to the city without the traffic and other hassles associated with city living. Camillus has several places to shop, eat and drink, and is considered a western suburb of Syracuse.
