Overview

DeWitt is a town in central Onondaga County, just east of Syracuse and bordered to the north by Salina, to the east by Manlius, to the south by Lafayette and Pompey and to the west by the city of Syracuse. Dewitt includes the village of East Syracuse, part of the Hancock International Airport, Clark Reservation State Park and several hamlets. Dewitt has the busy ShoppingTown Mall, which includes a movie-theater multiplex, and most of the campus (and all of the academic buildings) of LeMoyne College.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, there’s a Tops Friendly Markets store on East Genesee Street in DeWitt and a Wegmans supermarket in the village of Fayetteville. A Price Chopper supermarket is only 4 miles northwest on Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse. For retail shopping, the ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt features stores like Sears, Macy’s and JC Penney’s. Target has a store on Towne Drive in Fayetteville, and Walmart has a store on Basile Row in East Syracuse.



Recreation & Entertainment

ShoppingTown Mall has a wide variety of places to shop and eat and includes a movie-theater multiplex. LeMoyne College offers various types of entertainment choices, including the Gifford Family Theatre, which offers professional theatre for young audiences. The Salt City Improv Theater offers improvisational comedy acts. The Fun Junction on Erie Boulevard East has laser tag and arcade games. For outdoor options, Clark Reservation State Park in the hamlet of Jamesville has rugged cliffs, a basin lake that’s great for fishing, and a nature center.



Transportation & Traffic

Interstate 481 is the major highway in town and heads north-south through the center of DeWitt. I-481 intersects the New York State Thruway in the northern part of town and intersects Interstate 690 in the eastern part of town. Half of Hancock International Airport, which serves the Syracuse region, is in DeWitt.



Pros & Cons

DeWitt is close to Syracuse and all of the city’s attractions. The town has a lovely state park, lots of shopping, and a vibrant village in Fayetteville. It’s quick and easy to get around here and quick and easy to get to the airport, but you’re also on most flight paths here.
